Just before the 2012 Olympic Games in London I worked with the 400 metre runner Christine Ohuruogu on two books based in a fictional training camp for elite teenaged athletes. In the end we invented two camps, one in England and one in Spain. Luckily, I did a lot of running when I was younger, and still occasionally run today. In fact I was once captain of the school cross-country team, and at one school I was taught by a then famous runner called Bruce Tulloh, who used to run barefoot. He once ran across the United States, but I think he wore shoes for that. I used run barefoot too, embarrassingly, in a kind of tribute. Anyway, I think these books capture both the joy and pain of running, and the fun of being away from home with a bunch of friends.
